1. Make a Colorful Watermelon Fan
This easy craft is fun as a classroom activity or when completed individually. Start with a favorite coloring page and carefully cut out the finished watermelon slice. Turn it upside down and attach it to one half of an ordinary paper plate and a long popsicle stick. Using scissors, carefully cut the textured edge of the paper plate to create fringes, and you have a unique fan that really works!
2. Craft a Watermelon Purse
This surprisingly easy craft requires two watermelon pages and a long piece of green yarn. Cut a plain white paper plate in half and staple the curved edges together, leaving the straight edges open. Paste one of the finished watermelon slices on each side and attach a green piece of yarn with staples on either end. The result is an adorable “watermelon purse.”
3. Dress Up a Fruit Salad Bowl
This craft is not only fun but practical as well. Any ordinary fruit salad bowl from a discount store will do to get started. A youngster can then color and cut out watermelons from various pages and laminate them to the outside of the fruit bowl. The entire outer surface should then be sprayed with two coats of acrylic spray for a cute fruit bowl or serving dish in which to put fruit salad.
4. Easy Paper Watermelon Craft
Give your child watermelon pages featuring the fruit’s outer and inner sections for a fun window or doorway decoration. Once they are cut out, they should be stapled together to form an accordion-style watermelon that will fan out from the center. This will show both the green, striped shell and red interior with all those black and white seeds. A piece of white yarn can be glued into the crevice where the cutouts are stapled together, and this 3D watermelon can be hung in a doorway or from a windowpane.
5. Laminate a Dessert Dish
Banana split dishes are perfect for this fun craft. The inside of the watermelon should be cut out separately and laminated to the inside of the dessert dish. Another coloring page might be needed to color enough of the green outer shell, which is then used for laminating the dish’s outer portion. The end result is a dessert dish that looks exactly like real watermelon!
6. Fancy up a Soccer Ball or Basketball
The round shape of a watermelon makes this the perfect item to dress up an old basketball or soccer ball. The page can be kept in its entirety and merely trimmed and laminated onto the ball, or several smaller watermelons can be colored and cut out for decal-style decorations. Just remember to laminate the ball with several coatings of acrylic spray so that it will stay nice for a long time.
7. A Hilarious Watermelon Hat
These fun hats are very easy to make, and youngsters will love wearing them. Watermelon pages featuring sliced watermelons are perfect for this craft due to their “pizza” shapes. They should be colored, glued to thin cardboard, and cut out. Sealing them in contact paper is also a good idea. From posterboard, the children can then cut a long strip and staple it together in a circle, then decorate it by gluing the broad end of the cutouts to its base for a hilarious hat.
8. Watermelon Popsicle Craft
Start this fun craft by having the children cut out the classic shape of an ice cream popsicle from thin cardboard. The cutouts should then be glued to popsicle sticks to make them realistic. Next, parts of the finished coloring pages should be used to decorate the cutouts. The bottom half inch of the popsicle should be decorated with the green part of the watermelon and the rest with the pink fruit. For extra fun, the youngsters can cut a “bite” out of the top of the popsicle.
9. Watermelon Wall Art
Have the children choose pages with a watermelon cut in half to show equal parts of the shell and the inner fruit. Next, the youngsters can make the watermelon come to life using small tufts of pink tissue paper, green felt, and black-and-white puffy paint. When the watermelon is decorated with these craft items, it will suddenly have that 3D look, and it can be sealed in glassine and displayed as creative wall art.
10. Create a Watermelon Patch
For this fun classroom activity, use a large piece of poster board or sheet paper to create a watermelon patch. The students can use crayons or markers to color grass and leaves on this background and add plastic ants for fun! After they are finished coloring their watermelons, they can be cut out and added to the “patch” for a fun and creative classroom mural.
